FREE LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Sacramento Public Library presents free “do it yourself” programs

    

      The current economic downturn has become a challenge for many community members.  The Sacramento Public Library will provide free programs that offer cost-saving tips in a wide-variety of “do-it-yourself” projects for school-age children, teens, adults, and families.

Family program: Kitchen Concoctions with ArtWorks

     Give thanks for all the food you are about to receive by making one-of-a-kind recipe books. Make your own self-hardening clay, pigments, and other art materials from everyday items you might find in the kitchen. Explore the world of design by creating food structures – good enough to eat.

School-age program: DIY Toy Tops and Candle Holders

     Learn how to make a toy top from common household items. Create a beautiful candle holder to use indoors or outside.  Children will be able to make one or both items.  Supplies will be provided.

Adult program: Getting Your Family Organized

Adult program: Home Plumbing Repair 101

     Using a model of a typical sink, general contractor Cliff Brackett will discuss the basic parts, what to look for when a problem occurs, and how to handle simple repairs or replacements. Learn how-to repair or replace a toilet, garbage disposal, and dishwasher.

     Start your married life off with less debt. You’ll also get some tips on setting up one-stop registries and online wedding information.

     Jewelry designer Julie Quattrin will demonstrate the making of a simple string bracelet.

      Stacey Ball of IndieSac will demonstrate how to make two cool crafts: felt lollipops and button rings.  All materials will be provided.

Teen program: Bleach Dyed T-shirts

      Bring a plain T-shirt (the darker the color, the more obvious the bleach effect) and create your own unique design.

Adult program: Home Electrical Repair 101  

      General contractor Cliff Brackett will discuss simple electrical repairs in your home, from replacing a switch or outlet to changing a light fixture or installing a new outlet. He will show how to use a voltage tester and other basic tools, as well as how to be safe when working around electricity. Cliff will bring a ‘live’ demonstration board for an inside look at the workings of a typical electrical box.

     Join certified landscaper and gardener Lisa Christensen for spring and summer tips for local gardens. Learn about easy, no-dig planting for beginners, what to plant, how and when to plant. Lisa will offer an introduction to composting, how to create a food forest, and herb spiral, and other innovative gardening techniques. Take home a mini-bag of garden spring greens, too.

Teen program: Zine It

     Learn a few simple zine (a self-published magazine) designs to bring your art to the masses. Create a platform for your poetry, manga, short stories, and what have you. Zines are the perfect way to mass produce and distribute your art.

Family program: Art to Wear with the Girl Scouts

     Turn an old garment into something new and fresh. Girl participant are asked to bring their own clothing items (T-shirt, jeans, etc.), and Girl Scout staff will provide materials (beads, buttons, fabric paint, etc.) to decorate/revamp the clothing item into something new. Girls will have the opportunity to learn about Girl Scouts and how to become involved in scouting.
